Colorectal Surgery

Living Pathology in the Operating Room

Mark Killingback

editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.

pagine: 278

"Colorectal Surgery: Living Pathology in the Operating Room" is two books in one. First, it is an atlas in the classic definition: each chapter is a two-page spread discussing one case. Functionally, each chapter is a case study with both the surgical and pathological perspectives beautifully rendered and fully explained. Visually, every chapter presents the reader with operative and/or diagnostic photos, and anatomic line drawings by the author. The text, more extensive than in many atlases, provides a concise yet complete operative record: patient history/work up, anatomic anomalies, the procedure itself, pathologic findings, and follow up. Key teaching points emphasize the most important and unique aspects of every case. Residents, fellows, and even seasoned practitioners will gain valuable diagnostic and therapeutic insights from this material. The case study presentation provides an excellent review tool for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery exam.

Percutaneous Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty

Herve Deramond , John M. Mathis
e altri

editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.

pagine: 324

Since the ?rst edition of this book was published in 2002, there have been many advances in our knowledge of percutaneous vertoplasty (PV), particularly about how to perform the procedure more safely and how to approach more complex case situations. Additionally, mate- als that were initially used "off label" or that simply were not FDA approved have completed their governmental review and have received FDA approval. This has increased the legitimacy of the p- cedure from the legal and reimbursement perspective. Controversy over height restoration and device selection has become a progressively bigger issue over time. Kyphoplasty (balloon assisted vertebroplasty) has received tremendous emphasis. This book c- pares and contrasts data and claims that differentiate kyphoplasty from percutaneous vertebroplasty. We also look at other methods that pot- tially can be used for height restoration. New procedures that deal with bone augmentation in other anatomic regions have evolved (i.e., sacroplasty) and are discussed. As this re- lution in image-guided percutaneous bone augmentation has dev- oped, multiple medical specialties have embraced these procedures in their training programs for both residents and practicing physicians.

Pediatric PET Imaging

Martin Charron

editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.

pagine: 599

Positron emission tomography (PET) has been at the forefront of fu- tional and molecular imaging for a number of years. The future of di- nostic imaging depends upon the ability to change from imaging anatomy to examining the processes at work in the body. The fact that there are now monographs examining particular aspects of PET, such as this book on the examination of children, speaks to the newly won maturity of PET. The authors are to be congratulated for the timely appearance of this volume. In recent years, PET has transformed the contributions of nuclear medicine to the diagnosis, staging, and follow-up of patients with cancer. Children with cancer deserve the very best and most comp- sionate care that society can provide. Ultimately the greatest comp- sion we can offer as physicians is to provide the best possible care. Those charged with creating public policy in the context of diagnostic medicine must make common cause with physicians and other sci- tists to ensure that that best possible care is realized at the bedside. All of the evidence suggests that PET is central to such optimal cancer care. In addition to the distinguished cast of physicians and researchers who contributed to this book, I welcome the contributions from te- nologists who are a key part of the interaction between the diagnostic process and the sick or potentially sick child. Good care is contingent upon putting parents and child at ease, and the technologist has a lead role in this.
