Lo scopo è quello di mostrare come il metodo narrativo usato in campo sanitario, ed in particolare in ambito pediatrico, sia non solo un modo più umano di affrontare i problemi dei pazienti ma anche il metodo più efficace nel cammino verso la loro guarigione ed il mantenimento della salute. La prima parte affronta il significato che ha rivestito portare la narrazione dentro agli ospedali, le ragioni scientifiche e umane di questo cambiamento, le sue conseguenze e i metodi più idonei per studiare questi problemi.
