CT is an accurate technique for assessing cardiac structure and function, but advances in computing power and scanning technology have resulted in increased popularity. It is useful in evaluating the myocardium, coronary arteries, pulmonary veins, thoracic aorta, pericardium, and cardiac masses; because of this and the speed at which scans can be performed, CT is even more attractive as a cost-effective and integral part of patient evaluation. This book collates all the current knowledge of cardiac CT and presents it in a clinically relevant and practical format appropriate for both cardiologists and radiologists. The images have been supplied by an experienced set of contributing authors and represent the full spectrum of cardiac CT. As increasing numbers have access to cardiac CT scanners, this book provides all the relevant information on this modality. For eight decades the Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases has been the standard text from which most medical students and house ofcers have learned rheumatology. I myself will never forget thumbing through an older edition of the Primer as a second-year resident, while waiting to review a perplexing patient with my tutor. Fortunately the tutor was r- ning late with his own patients, so I had time to fip through the book - then much thinner - a couple of times. While turning the pages, per- ing the features of those diseases whose names were still exotic to me, and considering my patient's history of conductive hearing loss and p- monary nodules, a light went on when I stumbled eventually on a part- ular chapter. I still remember the jaw-dropping efect on my tutor of my announcement then that I had a patient with Wegener's granulomatosis. I think I became a rheumatologist that very moment! Subsequent editions of the Primer have sufered from the inevitable "obesity creep," making it an outstanding reference textbook but virtually impossible to fip through quickly while awaiting one's tutor, and even more difcult to slip into the pocket of a white coat to carry on rounds. For this reason we have created the Pocket Primer, a mini version that cuts the larger book down to its essentials.

Due to the multidisciplinary approach presentation of the basic plastic surgery knowledge with adjustment to new technologies, the book targets not only plastic surgeons but also hand, microsurgeons, hand and neck specialists, and breast surgeons. It will be of great interest to young surgeons in training for fast comprehensive overview of plastic surgery when preparing for board exams as well as envision the future of new surgical technologies and make the decision on their sub-specialty choice.

Around the time of writing the first edition - about a decade ago - there were very few monographs on this s- ject: today, there are possibly no less than 20. Based on critical inputs, this edition stands thoroughly revamped. New chapters on ventilator waveforms, airway humidification, and aerosol therapy in the ICU now find a place. Novel software-based modes of ventilation have been included. Ventilator-associated pneumonia has been se- rated into a new chapter. Many new diagrams and algorithms have been added. As in the previous edition, considerable energy has been spent in presenting the material in a reader-friendly, conv- sational style. And as before, the book remains firmly rooted in physiology. Coloproctology is a surgical specialty which dynamically changes every few years. There is a profusion of colorectal textbooks but specialty series on particularly complex topics as well as on the specialized management approach for trainees and training colorectal surgeons are actually few. The aim of this text is a superior quality colorectal book written by world experts targeted at senior surgical and colorectal trainees and young consultant coloproctologists in current areas of subspecialty expertise. The structure of the chapters is current and is based on what does not appear and is not addressed in current colorectal textbooks. This series has proven useful in areas already represented, including Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, Transplantation Surgery, etc. The text is aimed at being relatively didactic with an algorithm approach to specialized areas within coloproctology which could potentially be updated every 3 years or so with new topics to create a set for didactic training in colorectal surgery. Con?rming the British genetic trait for writing and publishing (as well as acting), two English (Oxford and London) and a Scottish orthopaedic surgeon (Edinburgh) have produced a third edition of their comprehensive text, joined, as in the second edition by an editor from Germany, recognizing its part in the European community. The 62 physician contributors are drawn from pink-colored countries in our childhood geography books-the old British Empire from Australia to Zambia and two from the former colony, the USA. The original purpose of the book was to give residents or registrars an easily accessible and concise description of diseases and conditions encountered in the practice of paediatric orthopaedic surgery and to prepare for their examinations. But the practicing orthopaedic s- geon will ?nd an update of current practice that can be read for clarity and constraint-enough but not too much. A foreword might be a preview of things to come, but a "back word" of what was thought to be the ?nal say on the subject is needed for a perspective in progress. A "back word" look reveals the tremendous progress in medical diagnosis and treatment of which paediatric orthopaedics and fracture care is a component. Clubfoot treatment based on the dictums of Hiram Kite has had a revolutionary change by Ponseti. The chapter by Eastwood has the details on cast application and orthotics follow-up to obtain the 95% correction without the extensive surgery many of us thought was needed.

This book is designed as a reference tool and a roadmap for the sports medicine orthopedist to minimize the complications in knee and shoulder surgery. Some complications are avoidable; some are not. Previously published as Handbook of Critical Care by CMG this book is a pocket-sized basic intensive care manual. The handbook is divided into 15 chapters, eight substantial ones covering the major organ systems, as well as infection, nutrition, physical injury and toxicology, and brief chapters on scoring systems and obstetrics. Many of the sections are loaded with very clear pictures, comparative tables, diagrams and lists, and provide more than adequate information for juniors training in intensive care medicine. The definitions, aetiology, clinical features and differential diagnoses are well covered. Excellent use is made of bullet points and numbering, which vastly increases the clarity of presentation compared with many other books that are pitched at a similar audience.

The fifth in a series of reviews, centered on a single major topic (vol. 1 Bone Formation, vol. 2 Bone Resorption, vol. 3 Engineering of Functional Skeletal Tissues, vol. 4 Osteoarthritis) written by acknowledged authorities in the field, and aimed at researchers, clinicians and others involved in the bone field.

Echocardiography is still relatively underused in the management of critically ill and hemodynamically unstable patients. There is a definite trend for favoring echocardiography over invasive assessment in intensive care units, however, clear guidelines are lacking. The author's experience over the last few years reinforced the importance of a book covering this topic. My family has directly bene? ted from some of the technological and scienti? c advances made in the care of critically ill children. My son Ryan was born during my third year of medical school. By some peculiar happenstance, I was nearing completion of a 4-week rotation in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU). The head of the pediatrics clerkship was kind enough to let me have a few days off around the time of the delivery-my wife, Cathy, was 2 weeks past her due date and had been scheduled for elective induction.
