Stroke Rehabilitation

Guidelines for Exercise and Training to Optimize Motor Skill

Janet H. Carr , Roberta B. Shepherd

editore: Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd

pagine: 300

Previously published as "A Motor Relearning Programme for Stroke", the authors have produced a completely revised and updated version of this essential guide to task - and context-specific exercise and training for the optimal functional recovery of stroke patients. The guidelines are based on scientific rationale and the latest clinical research and cover a range of critical everyday actions, while the modern and accessible format with many new photographs and line drawings ensures maximum clarity and practicality. Written by two acknowledged experts in their field, "Stroke Rehabilitation" presents Carr and Shepherd's internationally respected system of stroke rehabilitation. The clear and comprehensive linking of science and clinical practice make this an indispensable volume for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and all those involved in the rehabilitation of patients with stroke.

Gastrointestinal Polyps

Ian C. Talbot , Karel Geobes
e altri

editore: Greenwich Medical Media Ltd

pagine: 184

With the advent of endoscopic techniques, the gastrointestinal tract has now become more accessable to clinical investigators. Polyps are amongst the commonest abnormalities biopsed and submitted for histological assessment. The biological behavior of a polyp realtes entirely to its pathological nature and accurate histological diagnosis is therefore vital. While so many textbooks and atlases include polyps in sections on gastrointestinal tumours, none have been so comprehensively devoted to the polyp as Gastrointestinal Polyps. The layout of the book has been desigened sequentially to describe the commoner synonyms when appropriate, the prevalence, the endoscopic/macroscopic appearences and microscopic features followed bya section on the biological behaviour and associated conditions. There is a section on treatment, if applicable, and an invaluable list of key references. Profusely illustrated in full colour throughout, it is designed to be the complete companion: a bench book not only for the practising histopathologist who regularly examines oesophageal, gastric, duodenal and intestinal polyps as part of his or her daily work but also for the endoscopist who regularly biopsies them.

Ovarian Cancer

Andy Berchuck , C. N. Hudson
e altri

editore: Oxford University Press

pagine: 427

Ovarian cancer provides an up-to-date and comprehensive synthesis of clinical management and research progress in the field of epithelial ovarian cancer. The book has its origins in two separate but complementary initiatives. One initiative was a series of reviews commissioned to cover the spectrum of clinical management of ovarian cancer from prevention, screening and diagnosis to surgery, chemotherapy and palliative care. The reviews were invited from an international panel of clinicians with expertise in the management of ovarian cancer. The second initiative was co-ordinated by the Helene Harris Memorial Trust (HHMT) which has organised key biennial meetings on ovarian cancer for the last 12 years. Attendance at the meetings is by invitation to a small group of international authorities on research aspects of ovarian cancer. Setting the clinically focused reviews alongside the HHMT research focused chapters has created a unique book. First, the book is unusually up-to-date and presents recent advances not included in other books in this field. Second, the contents are comprehensive and cover aetiology, pathology, screening, prevention, diagnosis, prognostic techniques, surgery, adjuvant therapy and palliative care. Third, the review chapters are set alongside more detailed coverage of recent clinical and basic science developments. Examples of this are the coverage of familial cancer, prevention, screening, and current therapy which are consequently much more topical and exciting. Fourth, there are sections on 'tumour biology' and 'novel therapies' which have not been covered in comparable books about ovarian cancer. Finally, the contributions are from a representative spectrum of experts from both research and clinical backgrounds and with a truly international perspective.

Monoclonal Antibodies

A Practical Approach

Christopher Dean , Phil S. Shepherd

editore: Oxford University Press

pagine: 510

Monoclonal Antibodies: A Practical Approach covers the preparation, testing, derivation, and applications of monoclonal antibodies. New immunological techniques incorporating tried and tested methodologies are described, making the book of interest to established and inexperienced immunologists. Both the standard somatic hybridization technique and recombinant techniques, including the use of phage libraries, for the preparation of rodent and human monoclonal antibodies are described. Protocols for both the small and large scale production are detailed, as well as purification and labelling (with both radioisotopes and non-radioisotopes) methods. The applications of monoclonal antibodies in immunoblotting, enzyme linked immunoassays, immunofluorescence, and FACS analysis are all covered in detail. Finally protocols are given for the use of monoclonal antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis, tissue typing, detecting DNA modified during chemotherapy, and in the clinical analysis of transplantation samples for malignancy. This book will therefore be an invaluable laboratory companion to anyone using monoclonal antibodies in their research.
